International medical laborotary professionals week labweek 2025
My Journey as a Lab Technologist – 12 Years and Counting Honestly, I didn’t choose this field… it just happened. After my Plus Two, I was completely confused. In fact, there wasn’t even confusion—I simply had no idea what to do next. ???? Somehow, life led me into the field of Medical Laboratory Technology. To be very honest, it took me almost a year just to understand what this course was really about. But slowly, things started changing… Today, when I look back, I feel proud. This field has given me everything I have achieved in life— * Dignity * Financial stability * A sense of purpose I still remember something my teacher said during my second year: "I am not saying BSc MLT is the best course in the world, but it will give you enough in life—whatever you truly need." At that time, it was just a statement… But over the years, I have realized how true those words were. As I continued my journey, I encountered countless patients, diseases, and real-life struggles. Each sample wasn’t just a test—it was someone’s story, someone’s pain, someone’s hope. These experiences didn’t just shape my career… They shaped me as a person. Now, as I complete 12 years as a Lab Technologist, I carry not just experience, but a deep respect for this profession. A profession that often works silently behind the scenes, yet plays a crucial role in healthcare. And today, I can proudly say— Even if I didn’t choose this field, This field truly chose me… and gave me a life I’m grateful for. ❤️
As part of International Laboratory Week, I would like to share a glimpse of my professional journey—a journey shaped by guidance, persistence, and a deepening passion for laboratory science. My entry into the field was not initially driven by personal ambition, but by my father’s vision. He encouraged me to pursue a VHSE MLT course with the practical goal of securing a job in a nearby hospital and earning a livelihood. With that intention, I stepped into the laboratory world—but what began as a means of survival gradually became my true calling. After completing VHSE, I underwent hospital training, which laid my foundation in practical laboratory work. I then pursued a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), which I completed in 2007. Soon after, I took on the role of Lab In-Charge for one year, gaining valuable leadership experience early in my career. Determined to advance academically, I enrolled in BSc MLT from 2009 to 2013 while continuing to work part-time. During my first year, I appeared for the PSC examination, and by the time I completed my degree, I received my posting order—marking the beginning of my government service. Alongside academics and work, I actively participated in professional student associations, which helped shape my professional identity and network. After dedicating 10 years to government service, I made a conscious decision to take a step forward in my academic journey. Currently, I am pursuing MSc MLT (2024 onwards), with a strong aspiration to continue towards a PhD. During my master’s journey, I expanded my role beyond learning. I have been actively involved in teaching—conducting classes for PSC coaching as well as for professional licensure examinations including GCC and ASCPi. Through both teaching and hands-on laboratory practice, I continue to refine my knowledge and skills every day. This continuous cycle of learning and teaching has made me realize that I am, in many ways, a philomath in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology—someone who is always eager to learn, explore, and grow. Interestingly, my relationship with laboratory science began with uncertainty. I still remember being in 6th standard, when my science teacher demonstrated an object under a microscope. I was anxious and unable to see anything through the eyepiece. Today, I handle the microscope with confidence and precision—symbolizing how far I have come. This journey reflects that passion can grow from the most unexpected beginnings. With persistence, continuous learning, and the courage to move forward, what once seemed unfamiliar can become a field of expertise. Happy International Laboratory Week to all professionals who work behind the scenes, making a difference every day.
From Lab Bench to Leadership: My Journey as a Laboratory Technologist & Entrepreneur Celebrating International Lab Week | April 19–24 Every year, International Lab Week (April 19–24) is a time to recognize the silent heroes behind healthcare—laboratory professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure accurate diagnosis and patient care. For me, this week is not just a celebration of a profession, but a reflection of a life-changing journey. The Beginning: A Passion for Laboratory Science My career began in 2014 at MES Medical College Hospital, Perinthalmanna, where I worked as a Laboratory Technologist until 2017. Those early years shaped my technical skills, discipline, and deep respect for the role laboratories play in saving lives. Every sample we handled carried a story, a diagnosis, and often, hope. A New Chapter in the UAE In December 2017, I moved to the United Arab Emirates in search of broader opportunities. Working in a new country came with its own challenges, but it also opened doors to growth, exposure, and learning. During my time in the UAE, I had the opportunity to work with reputed healthcare organizations such as Prime Healthcare Group and Pure Health UAE. These experiences expanded my professional knowledge and gave me a global perspective on laboratory practices and healthcare systems. The Entrepreneurial Spark While working as a laboratory technologist in the UAE, I noticed a common challenge among many of my friends and colleagues—navigating the complex process of professional licensing and job placement in GCC countries. This inspired me to start a small consultancy service, initially aimed at helping my close circle. My goal was simple: to guide healthcare professionals through licensing procedures and help them secure meaningful career opportunities in the GCC. What started as a side initiative soon grew into a mission. Building Something Bigger As demand increased, I realized the potential to create a structured platform that could support more professionals. My best friend and partner, Dileep, joined me in this journey, sharing the same vision of empowering healthcare workers. Together, we expanded our services, focusing on transparency, reliability, and genuine support. From Professional to Healthcare Entrepreneur While continuing my journey abroad, I always had a vision of giving back to my hometown. That vision became a reality in 2025 when I started Aicura Diagnostic Center in my village, Angadipuram. Launching a diagnostic center was not just a business decision—it was a commitment to improving access to quality healthcare services in my community. With my background as a laboratory technologist, I ensured that the center focuses on accuracy, reliability, and patient-centered care. Aicura Diagnostic Center represents the next phase of my journey—bringing international experience back home and creating impact at the grassroots level. A Milestone Achievement Today, I am proud to say that over the past 8 years, more than 20,000 healthcare professionals have benefited from our consultancy services. What began as a small effort to help friends has now grown into a trusted platform guiding thousands toward international careers. At the same time, building a diagnostic center in my hometown stands as a personal milestone—combining my professional expertise with my entrepreneurial vision. Reflecting During International Lab Week As I look back, I remain deeply connected to my roots as a laboratory technologist. That foundation is what drives my passion even today. This International Lab Week, I celebrate not only the profession but also the journey it gave me—the journey from the lab bench to entrepreneurship. A Message to Fellow Professionals To every laboratory professional reading this: your work matters more than you realize. Whether you choose to grow within the lab or explore new paths, your skills, knowledge, and dedication can open countless opportunities. Keep learning, keep growing, and never underestimate where your journey can take you.
My Journey as a Molecular Biologist – A Story of Purpose and Growth From a young age, I was fascinated by the invisible world within us — DNA, genes, and the molecular mechanisms that define life itself. This curiosity led me to choose the field of molecular biology, where even the smallest discovery can have a life-changing impact. My journey was not easy. Like many others, I faced challenges — limited guidance, complex concepts, and the pressure of mastering advanced techniques like PCR, sequencing, and molecular diagnostics. There were moments of doubt, especially when experiments failed or results didn’t go as expected. But what kept me going was purpose. Every sample I handled, every analysis I performed, I knew it contributed to accurate diagnosis, research, and sometimes even life-saving decisions. Working at the molecular level taught me patience, precision, and resilience. I also realized that growth in this field never stops. I began exploring opportunities like GCC licensing, ASCP certification, and global molecular diagnostic advancements. At times, it felt overwhelming — not knowing the right path or how to reach international standards — but my ambition to achieve more kept me moving forward. Today, I stand not just as a molecular biologist, but as someone committed to continuous learning and innovation. My dream is to build a global career, contribute to advanced research and diagnostics, and inspire others to explore the limitless potential of molecular science. Message to fellow molecular biologists:We work at the core of life itself. Even though our work is often unseen, its impact is profound. Stay curious, stay determined, and never underestimate the power of what you do. ✨ This is just the beginning of my journey. — Dhanya Praseen
From Accidental Start to Purposeful Impact My journey into medical laboratory science didn’t begin with a clear plan… It started accidentally as a BSc MLT student. But very early on, something changed— I became deeply curious. Not just about doing tests, but about the science behind every result, the responsibility of validation, and even the lab management systems working behind the scenes. That curiosity stayed with me when I started my career as a general lab technologist in a medical college hospital right after graduation. That phase built my foundation. It strengthened my technical skills, shaped my thinking, and made me genuinely passionate about the profession. At the same time, I faced a reality many lab professionals know well— High responsibility… but limited growth and remuneration. That pushed me to think beyond the system I was in. With that mindset, I decided to step out and explore global opportunities. After clearing the UAE MOH Prometric and completing my viva, I moved to the UAE and began working in a diagnostic center in Sharjah, later transitioning into the Dubai Health Authority. This phase changed my perspective completely. I was exposed to structured systems, international standards, and clear career pathways. And one thing became very clear to me— The problem is not talent… it’s lack of direction and awareness. While working there, same time along with my co-founder Jaseer PK, I started observing a bigger gap in our field. Not just in opportunities… but in guidance, licensing clarity, and structured preparation. That’s how Medline International began— not as a business idea, but as a solution to a real problem we were seeing every day. Soon, we realized something even more important— Guidance alone is not enough Professionals need structured learning support That insight led us to build SimplyMED Learning— a platform designed to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity. Today, what we’ve built is more than a consultancy or an academy… It’s a pathway It’s a support system It’s direction for thousands of healthcare professionals Even as I moved into entrepreneurship, I never disconnected from the laboratory field. I continued learning, mentoring, and upgrading myself— working as a laboratory accreditation mentor of a healthcare group in Abu Dhabi and later achieving the ASCP MLS certification. Because I strongly believe— You cannot build for a community you are not connected to Now, I’m also part of building AiCura Diagnostics, with a vision to create a system where lab professionals don’t just work… They grow They lead They build My Perspective Today This journey is not just about moving from one role to another… It’s about evolving in mindset: From curiosity → to clarity From working in the system → to building systems From searching for opportunities → to creating them And this journey is still continuing… Because I’m always connected to the medlab community, constantly learning, adapting, and building solutions. “We may enter the lab by chance… but together, we can grow, lead, and shape the future of our profession.”
Every profession has a story, and mine began with uncertainty, determination, and a quiet curiosity about making a difference. After completing my higher secondary education, I found myself searching for a career that was not only stable, but meaningful—something that would contribute to society in a real and lasting way. It was during this time that a family friend, a laboratory technologist, introduced me to the field of Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT). The path was not widely encouraged; many advised against it due to limited opportunities in the industry. But something about the profession resonated with me. I chose to follow it—not because it was easy or popular, but because it felt right. My academic journey in this field began at Fr Mullers Medical College, where I received a strong foundation in laboratory sciences. The institution played a crucial role in shaping my technical knowledge, discipline, and professional outlook. The comprehensive coaching I received there went beyond textbooks—it emphasized hands-on training, analytical thinking, quality assurance, and a deep understanding of diagnostic processes. This early mentorship gave me the confidence to step into the professional world with clarity and purpose. My career officially began in 2013 at Medical Trust Hospital, Kochi, Kerala, India, where I took my first steps into laboratory science. Those early days were filled with learning, challenges, and growth. It was here that I was trained, refined, and gradually transformed into a professional, building a strong foundation for my future. As I progressed, I recognised the importance of advancing my knowledge. I pursued higher education and completed my Master’s degree, strengthening my expertise and preparing myself for global opportunities. In 2015, I achieved a key milestone by passing the Qatar Prometric Examination, which opened doors to international experience. By 2017, my journey had taken me to the United Arab Emirates, where I continued to expand my skills and adapt to diverse healthcare systems and laboratory standards. However, one of the most defining phases of my journey came in New Zealand. When I first attempted the New Zealand Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) examination, I relied on self-learning and personal references. Despite my efforts, the outcome was not successful. It was a moment that tested my confidence and made me reflect deeply on my approach. Determined to improve, I sought structured guidance and enrolled with SimplyMED. The comprehensive coaching I received there made a significant difference. Their focused training, exam-oriented approach, and in-depth coverage of International laboratory standards, regulations, and best practices helped me bridge the gaps in my knowledge. More importantly, it gave me clarity, direction, and renewed confidence. With disciplined preparation and the right guidance, I reattempted the examination in 2025—and this time, I succeeded. Today, I am proud to work as a Laboratory Scientist in New Zealand. Every sample I process and every result I validate contributes to a larger purpose. Behind every test lies a patient, a family, and a story. While our work often happens behind the scenes, its impact is profound—supporting clinicians, guiding treatment decisions, and ultimately saving lives. This Laboratory Week, I reflect not only on my journey but also on the essence of this profession. It is a field built on precision, resilience, and continuous learning. And even behind the microscope, we make a difference—every single day
I still remember the uncertainty I carried when I first chose this field. It wasn’t a childhood dream. It wasn’t a carefully planned ambition. It was a quiet decision, made somewhere between curiosity and confusion. Honestly, I didn’t fully understand what I was stepping into when I chose this field. I completed my degree and post-graduation, learning the foundations, understanding the processes, and slowly adapting to the rhythm of lab life. On the surface, everything seemed clear. But deep inside, it felt like I was walking a path that had already been drawn… not one I had chosen for myself. The lab was not just a workplace — it was a space of responsibility. Every sample processed and every report generated has the power to influence a clinician’s treatment decision and the life of a person seeking answers about their health. That realization didn’t come all at once. It grew slowly, quietly—until one day, I could no longer see my work as “routine.” I began to pause. To question. To feel. Why does this happen? What is this result trying to tell us? Is there a story hidden beyond these numbers? Those questions stayed with me long after my shifts ended. They followed me home. They kept me awake. What started as curiosity slowly turned into something deeper—something that refused to be ignored. A purpose. But the journey was far from easy. There were days when exhaustion outweighed motivation. Nights when self-doubt whispered louder than confidence. Moments when I questioned if all this effort—this unseen, unrecognized work—was truly leading anywhere. Because in our profession, we often stand in the shadows. No applause. No spotlight. Just precision, pressure, and responsibility. Yet, even in those quiet corners, something inside me kept pushing forward. A voice that said—there is more to understand, more to discover. That voice changed the direction of my life. I stepped beyond routine diagnostics and entered the world of research. And eventually, I took one of the most defining steps of my journey—pursuing a PhD in Pathology. Becoming a scientist didn’t happen overnight. There was no single moment of transformation. It was built—day by day—on discipline, on resilience, on the countless hours spent in the lab when no one was watching. On the mistakes that taught me humility. On the persistence that taught me strength. When I look back today, I don’t see a shift from technologist to scientist. I see a journey that grew, evolved, and found its meaning over time. The lab didn’t just teach me techniques. It taught me how to be careful—because every detail matters. It taught me how to be responsible—because lives depend on it. It taught me how to stay curious—because answers are never final. And those lessons became the foundation of who I am today. More than a career, this profession gave me a purpose that continues to evolve. As I move forward, I carry a quiet ambition—to keep contributing, to keep learning, to bridge diagnostics and research. Today, I can finally say this—with honesty and with pride: Even when I was just following a path, it helped me create my own. "From handling samples to shaping science — this journey is my proof that lab professionals are not just behind the scenes, but at the very core of healthcare. It’s time the world recognized our true impact.” _____________________________________________________________Dr. Sreerag K
Iam Ranjith Kalavara, and my journey in laboratory medicine began with a strong interest in understanding the science behind diagnosis since 2010. My role is not just technical—it’s about ensuring accuracy, maintaining quality standards, managing multiple instruments, and supporting clinical nursing/ healthcare teams with reliable results that directly impact patient care. The journey hasn’t been without challenges. Maintaining precision under pressure and adapting to continuously evolving technologies required dedication and resilience. However, what kept me going is the knowledge that every diagnostic result plays a crucial role in a patient’s life. I strongly believe that POCT is shaping the future of diagnostics with faster and more accessible testing Best wishes to all laboratorians
It began in the laboratory, where precision, patience, and dedication shaped my foundation as a lab technologist. With a growing passion not just to practice science, but to share it, I pursued my postgraduation in Msc MLT Microbiology through hard work and perseverance. That dedication opened the doors to teaching, where I found my true calling. Today, as an educator, I strive to inspire young minds, nurture future laboratory professionals, and pass on not just knowledge, but a sense of purpose
I began my journey as a Medical Laboratory Technology student in 2016. At that time, I was not at all aware of the subjects or the curriculum, as I had chosen the course only because my parents compelled me to. After entering the classroom and listening to endless lectures about the minute particles in our blood, I realized that I was not studying an ordinary professional degree. There is something truly magical about this course—we get to see things that the naked eye cannot see. We can create suitable environments for bacteria to grow, and we can quantify biomolecules, all of which are essential for diagnosing diseases. The journey was not easy. Endless practical sessions, confusing chemical reactions, empty culture plates, and washed-out smears often left us feeling lost and uncertain. After completing the course, the real challenge began. Reality was very different from what we had imagined. Patients, samples, machines, and tests constantly tested our patience. But the one thing that makes me proud as a laboratory technologist is that I can contribute to saving at least one life every day by delivering accurate results. That is when I truly realized the meaning of our motto: “Behind the scenes, behind the cure.”
Honestly, my journey into this field wasn’t very clear in the beginning. Like many others, I faced confusion, overthinking, and self doubt. There were times I questioned whether I was on the right path. But slowly, things started making sense. A major turning point was becoming an ASCP Molecular Biology instructor. I was given a subject and had to build everything from the root level, starting with reference books, then preparing notes, question banks, question papers, conducting live discussions, and recording sessions. It wasn’t easy. But that process changed me. I was no longer just studying to pass exams. I was learning to explain, simplify, and truly understand. At the same time, working as an apprentice at Jubilant Biosys helped me connect theory with real lab practice. Performing techniques like PCR, cDNA synthesis, RNA isolation, ELISA, Western blotting and other techniques made every concept more real and meaningful. Balancing both roles hasn’t always been easy, but it shaped me into someone more confident and disciplined. Today, I’m still learning, still growing… But I know one thing for sure, this field didn’t just give me knowledge, It gave me direction. And I’m still walking forward… with purpose
Every journey in healthcare doesn’t stay within the lab. For Brinchu Kunjumon, it began with a foundation in BSc Medical Laboratory Technology— a field that builds precision, discipline, and a deep understanding of diagnostics. But early in his career, he saw something beyond routine lab work. He realized that while clinical expertise is essential… systems, strategy, and direction create long-term impact. The Shift – From Clinical to Management Rather than staying confined to a single role, he made a conscious transition—from clinical practice to management. This shift required: - Understanding healthcare operations at scale - Adapting to strategic and business roles - Seeing the bigger picture beyond the laboratory Through experience with leading diagnostic and genomics-focused organizations, he developed a deep understanding of how healthcare systems truly function. From Experience to Vision Over time, one insight became clear— Healthcare professionals are not lacking talent They are lacking direction, structured guidance, and the right ecosystem This led to the creation of Beverse Health— a platform designed to guide healthcare professionals toward global opportunities and career growth. A Mission Beyond Business Today, his journey has evolved into something much bigger than entrepreneurship. A mission to mentor, mold, and build healthcare professionals A mission to help them rise beyond limitations A mission to solve a real problem in the community— the struggle for better remuneration and professional dignity Because he believes: Healthcare professionals deserve not just jobs… but recognition, growth, and respect. Your starting point does not define your final impact. From a lab background to building systems and guiding others— it’s about choosing to create change, not just adapt to it. “You may begin your journey in the laboratory… but your purpose can be to elevate an entire community.”
