“From Uncertainty to Expertise – A Journey of Persistence in Laboratory Science”- Sugeesh Subramanyan, Labtechnologist, DHS-Govt of Kerala

As part of International Laboratory Week, I would like to share a glimpse of my professional journey—a journey shaped by guidance, persistence, and a deepening passion for laboratory science.

My entry into the field was not initially driven by personal ambition, but by my father’s vision. He encouraged me to pursue a VHSE MLT course with the practical goal of securing a job in a nearby hospital and earning a livelihood. With that intention, I stepped into the laboratory world—but what began as a means of survival gradually became my true calling.

After completing VHSE, I underwent hospital training, which laid my foundation in practical laboratory work. I then pursued a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), which I completed in 2007. Soon after, I took on the role of Lab In-Charge for one year, gaining valuable leadership experience early in my career.

Determined to advance academically, I enrolled in BSc MLT from 2009 to 2013 while continuing to work part-time. During my first year, I appeared for the PSC examination, and by the time I completed my degree, I received my posting order—marking the beginning of my government service. Alongside academics and work, I actively participated in professional student associations, which helped shape my professional identity and network.

After dedicating 10 years to government service, I made a conscious decision to take a step forward in my academic journey. Currently, I am pursuing MSc MLT (2024 onwards), with a strong aspiration to continue towards a PhD.

During my master’s journey, I expanded my role beyond learning. I have been actively involved in teaching—conducting classes for PSC coaching as well as for professional licensure examinations including GCC and ASCPi. Through both teaching and hands-on laboratory practice, I continue to refine my knowledge and skills every day. This continuous cycle of learning and teaching has made me realize that I am, in many ways, a philomath in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology—someone who is always eager to learn, explore, and grow.

Interestingly, my relationship with laboratory science began with uncertainty. I still remember being in 6th standard, when my science teacher demonstrated an object under a microscope. I was anxious and unable to see anything through the eyepiece. Today, I handle the microscope with confidence and precision—symbolizing how far I have come.

This journey reflects that passion can grow from the most unexpected beginnings. With persistence, continuous learning, and the courage to move forward, what once seemed unfamiliar can become a field of expertise.

Happy International Laboratory Week to all professionals who work behind the scenes, making a difference every day.
